On on August 12, Dell Streak is launching with a new price: two-year AT&T contract cost $299.99, and $549.99 for an unlocked edition. The Streak`s $300 price tag is 40% less than the entry-level Apple iPad and less than half the price of an iPad 3G. That means Dell is trying to get a piece of the rapidly growing tablet market with its smaller offering and lower price.
However, it`s smaller than an iPad, which start at $499.00 for the 16GB model and $629.00 for the 3G version. You only get that $300 price, though, if you buy the device with a full data and voice plan from AT&T. If you chose that option, you`d almost certainly want to make it your primary phone.
However, because the device can also make phone calls, it competes with the Droid X, HTC Evo, the Samsung Galaxy S, and the iPhone 4. Dell`s newest mobile device runs Google`s Android OS and includes front- and back-facing cameras, Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities, and a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor — the same one that powers the Nexus One phone. It was first announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The Dell Streak`s $300 price seems fitting to us. It`s larger and more advanced than most smartphones, which often retail for $200 with a two-year contract.
Then the question becomes: You can always buy it without the plan, but then it costs $549.99, making it more expensive than the a 16GB iPad? Would you rather have an a Dell Streak or a smartphone like the iPhone 4?
